B.Tech CSE fresher resume: projects, CGPA and certifications, and where each goes

A Computer Science fresher is rarely short of skills. The shortfall is evidence. This guide shows where to put projects, coding practice, NPTEL, internships and marks so a reader finds proof quickly.

In short

  • Lead with Education and projects. Keep two to four projects, each with a stack, who used it and an outcome, and a link if it is deployed.
  • Show coding practice as counts and ranks with the field size, not as 'good at DSA'.
  • Three to five certifications. For NPTEL, give the tier and the issuing IIT.
  • Keep CGPA and school marks for campus and services applications. Skills must each be evidenced somewhere on the page.

What a reader scans for

A recruiter or interviewer looking at a CSE fresher resume tends to ask the same four questions. Is there something here that actually runs? Does each listed skill show up in a project? Do the marks clear the screen for this employer? Is the page easy to read in under a minute? Placement-preparation sites report that some companies ask placement cells for GitHub links, coding-profile scores and deployment URLs, which is a sign that links are read. Treat that as a pattern in the guidance, not a rule that every employer follows.

Everything below serves those four questions. If a line does not help answer one of them, it probably belongs off the page.

The layout

Use the Fresher order: summary, education, skills, projects, internships, certifications, achievements. One page, one column. The reasoning for each section is in resume format for freshers, and the wording of a good summary is in resume summary for freshers. Here is the skills block, which is where most CSE resumes go wrong.

A skills block that can be defended

Skills
Languages: Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL
Frameworks: Spring Boot, React, Node.js
Tools: Git, Docker, Postman, Linux
Core: Data Structures, OOP, DBMS, Operating SystemsEvery item is something you can answer questions on. Cut anything you have only watched a tutorial for.

A deployed project with real users beats a bigger one that lives on your laptop. Choose the ones closest to the role you want, and put the domain in the name if there is one, such as fintech, agritech or edtech, because recruiters filter on it. Avoid presenting a tutorial clone (a to-do list, a weather app, a calculator) as a project unless you changed it in a way you can explain.

Four project rewrites

  1. Before

Made a chat app using MERN

    After

Built a group-chat app with the MERN stack and Socket.IO; 90 hostel residents used it for 3 months, and messages arrived in under 1 second in testing

    Why

Stack, real users, duration and a measured result. The weak line only names a tool set.

  2. Before

    Created a student management system

    After

Developed a Java Swing and MySQL student-records system for a coaching centre with 240 students, replacing a paper register for attendance and fees

    Why

Names the client, the size and the manual process it replaced.

  3. Before

    Made a portfolio website

    After

Designed and deployed a responsive portfolio in React on Netlify, scoring 96 for mobile performance in Lighthouse

    Why

Gives a verifiable measure. A reader can open the link and check.

  4. Before

ML project on house price prediction

    After

Trained a gradient-boosting model on 21,000 Pune property listings in Python, cutting mean absolute error from ₹9.4 L to ₹6.1 L against a simple-average baseline

    Why

Dataset size, the method and a before-and-after against a stated baseline.

Coding practice, hackathons and open source

Show practice as a count and a rank with the field size, and link the profile as visible text. Hackathons that students commonly list include Smart India Hackathon, Flipkart GRiD, TCS CodeVita, Infosys HackWithInfy and the Google Solution Challenge. Name the round you reached and how many teams entered, and leave out events you only registered for.

  1. Before

    Participated in coding competitions

    After

    Cleared round 2 of a university-level coding contest, placing 37th of 900 teams with a graph-algorithms solution in C++

    Why

Round reached, rank and field size, plus what you solved.

Certifications: three to five, with tier

Pick the ones that match the role. NPTEL courses carry a tier (Elite, Elite with Silver or Gold) and a percentile, so give both and name the IIT that ran the course. Cloud fundamentals from AWS, Azure or Google Cloud signal that you have seen a platform. A stack of unrelated certificates dilutes the strong ones, so cut to the few you would happily discuss. List only certificates you hold.

Certifications, as lines

Certifications
NPTEL: Data Structures and Algorithms using Java, Elite + Silver, IIT Kharagpur, 2025
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Amazon Web Services, 2025
Programming in Python, graded project, Coursera, 2024Issuer and year on every line, so each can be checked.

CGPA and school marks

Always show the degree score with its scale. If it is below the figure you expect an employer to use, still include it, because omission looks worse and the application form will ask anyway. Lead with projects and skills so the score is one fact among several. Service-company applications usually want Class XII and X as well. Product companies and startups often do not. Follow each form, and see CGPA vs percentage and school marks.

What to drop

  • A skills list of 25 items when three appear in a project. Keep the ones you can defend.
  • A list of college subjects. The degree line already says what you studied.
  • Generic soft-skill lists. Show communication through a presentation, a club session or a documented project.
  • Tutorial clones with no users, no twist and no link.
  • A photo, date of birth, father's name or declaration. See what to remove from an Indian resume.

Questions people ask

I am from ECE or EEE and want software jobs. What changes?

Lead with your software projects and the stack, keep one line on your core branch, and say in the summary that you are targeting software roles. Do not pad the page with core-subject lists. Certifications in programming and a deployed project show direction better than a branch name.

I have no internship. Is that fatal?

No. A deployed project, a hackathon round, an open-source contribution or a virtual internship labelled as virtual can carry the page. Do not invent an internship, because employers verify them.

Which language should I list first?

The one in your strongest project and the one the posting names. Order by how well you can discuss it, not alphabetically.

Should I put my LeetCode rating on the resume?

Counts and ranks are fine when the linked profile shows them. Leave out figures you would not want to defend, and write the profile URL as visible text.

Does one resume work for services and product companies?

The facts can stay identical, but the emphasis changes. Services drives look hard at marks and fundamentals, product teams at projects and problem-solving. Reorder skills and the summary for each, and never change a fact.
