CGPA vs percentage, and what to do with 10th and 12th marks
Marks are the one section nobody can afford to get wrong, because employers check them against documents. This guide covers how to write a score, which one to use, and when school marks belong on the page.

In short
- Always write the score with its scale: CGPA 8.4/10 or 78.6%. A bare 8.4 means nothing to a parser or a person.
- Use the form your marksheet uses. Convert only when the form or your university says how.
- List Class X and XII while you are a fresher or have up to about three years of experience, and for campus, services and government applications. Drop them later, and for most startups.
- If a score is low, include it and lead with projects. Never round up or change a figure.
Write the score so it cannot be misread
A score without a scale is ambiguous. 8.4 could be a CGPA out of 10, a CGPA out of 4 or a typing error. Parsers cope better with units: grading fields in commercial parsers are documented as values like '8.2 CGPA' or '78%', and a bare number gives them nothing to classify. Copy the figure exactly as your marksheet prints it.
| Your marksheet says | Write | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| CGPA 8.4 on a 10-point scale | CGPA 8.4/10 | 8.4, or 84% |
| CGPA 3.4 on a 4-point scale | CGPA 3.4/4 | 3.4 |
| 78.6 percent | 78.6% | 79%, unless that is how the document prints it |
| A class or grade only, such as First Class | First Class, with the percentage if printed | A percentage you worked out yourself |
| Both CGPA and percentage | CGPA 8.2/10 (78.0%) | Mixing the two in different places |
CGPA or percentage: which one to use
Use the one your university prints. If the application form asks for a percentage and you hold a CGPA, use your university's own conversion formula if it publishes one. If it does not, enter the CGPA and say so in the form's remarks field. A rule of thumb from the internet may not be the one your university or the employer accepts, and a converted figure that does not match the documents is exactly the kind of mismatch verification finds.
10th and 12th marks: when they belong
Our research suggests three situations where school marks help. The employer asks for them, which campus drives at the large IT-services companies and most government and PSU forms do. Your marks are strong, around 80% or higher. Or you are a fresher with little else to show. They stop helping after about three years of experience, and product companies and startups generally do not read them, so follow each application's form.
Keep them to one line each: the class, the board, the school and city, the percentage and the year. Class XII first, then Class X.
School marks as one line each
If your marks are low
Include them. Omission looks worse than a modest figure, and the application form will ask anyway. What you can control is what sits around it. Put projects, skills and any internship where the eye lands first, so the score becomes one fact among several. Never round up, restate a lower score as a higher one or drop a year to hide a gap. Verification firms compare resumes with records, and in one firm's report for the first half of FY26 around 4% of white-collar checks found a discrepancy.
Many employer notices set minimum marks. Career sites often quote 60% or a CGPA of about 6.0 to 6.5 for services companies, but the notice for your drive is the only authority. Read it before you decide whether to apply. Resume for IT-services campus hiring covers what those drives tend to check.
Diploma, lateral entry and ITI
Show the path you actually took. If you went from Class X to a diploma and then joined a degree in the second year by lateral entry, write the degree, the diploma and Class X, each with its score and year. Do not add a Class XII line you did not take. An ITI certificate sits where a diploma would, with the trade and the year.
Backlogs and gaps
If an application asks about backlogs or an education gap, answer the form truthfully. On the resume, use month-and-year dates rather than year-only ranges, since a bare '2020-22' can be read two ways. If there is a gap that a reader will notice, one honest line is better than a silence they fill themselves. The wording is in resume for career switchers and gap years.

Questions people ask
Should I round 7.86 to 7.9?
Copy the marksheet. If it prints 7.86, write 7.86. Rounding up is a small change that can cause a mismatch in verification, and it gains you nothing a reader will notice.
Do I need to write the board name for Class X and XII?
Yes. CBSE, ICSE or the name of the state board is asked on most forms, and it helps a reader place the percentage.
I did a diploma after Class X. How do I show it?
Show the actual path: Class X, then the diploma, then the lateral-entry degree, each with years and scores. Do not invent a Class XII entry.
Is a CGPA of 6.5 too low to list?
No. List it with its scale and lead with projects and skills. Whether it clears a company's screen depends on that company's notice, which you should read directly.
Do I keep Class X and XII if I have two years of experience?
Usually drop them unless an application asks. After about three years they take space that bullets need. Keep them for government forms, whatever your experience.
