Resume format for freshers in India: a section-by-section guide

Most fresher resumes lose the reader on structure before the content gets a chance. This is the order that works for campus drives, Naukri uploads and company portals, with the reason behind each choice.

In short

  • One page, one column, standard headings. Education and projects lead; skills sit in three or four grouped lines.
  • The header carries your name, one +91 number, a professional email, city and state, and a LinkedIn or GitHub link. No photo, date of birth or street address.
  • Every project and internship gets a stack, a number and an outcome. A list of college subjects is not a section.
  • Keep CGPA and Class X and XII marks where the application asks for them. They cost one line each.

A fresher has little to show, so the reader leans on structure. Can I find the degree, the marks, the best project and the contact details in a few seconds? If the layout hides any of them, the content never gets read. The format below is deliberately plain.

Two things shape it. A human reviewer spends very little time on each page, and many employers also run the file through a parser that reads it as plain text. And a fresher's evidence sits in education, projects and internships, not in job titles, so those lead, in a single column with standard headings.

The order of sections, and why

Use this order unless a campus notice asks for something else. It is the order our Fresher preset follows, drawn from the guidance in the sources at the foot of this page.

  1. 01

    Header

Name, one +91 mobile number, a professional email, city and state, and links to LinkedIn and, for technical roles, GitHub. Write links as visible text.

  2. 02

    Summary

Two or three lines: your degree and year, your strongest proof, the role you want. Skip any line that begins with 'seeking a challenging position'. See resume summary for freshers.

  3. 03

    Education

Degree, branch, college, university, years, and CGPA or percentage. Class XII and Class X come next as one line each if the application asks for them.

  4. 04

    Skills

Three or four grouped lines, such as Languages, Frameworks, Tools and Core subjects. List only what you could discuss in an interview.

  5. 05

    Projects

Two to four, most relevant first. Each gets a stack, a result and a link.

  6. 06

    Internships and training

Treat internships as experience: company, role, city, dates, two or three bullets. Label a virtual internship as virtual.

  7. 07

    Certifications

Three to five that match the role, each with issuer and year.

  8. 08

    Achievements and positions of responsibility

Ranks with the field size, and roles where you led people or handled money. Languages can close the page if the role needs them.

Header: what goes in and what stays out

Put contact details in the body of the page, not in a Word header or footer. Several parsers skip those regions, and Greenhouse lists contact details placed in a header or footer among the causes of a failed parse. Write the number as +91 followed by ten digits. Use an email address you will still own next year, because a college mailbox stops working after you graduate.

A clean header

Sneha Kulkarni
Nagpur, Maharashtra | +91 98001 77001 | sneha.kulkarni.cs@example.com
linkedin.com/in/sneha-kulkarni-cs | github.com/sneha-kulkarni-csOne phone, one email, city and state. No street address, no photo, no date of birth.

Education: marks, years and the school lines

Write the degree in full once, then the score with its scale: 'CGPA 8.2/10' or '72.4%'. A bare '8.2' tells a reader nothing. Class XII and Class X follow as one line each, with board and year, while you are a fresher or in your first few years. After that they only take space your bullets need. The detailed rules, including what to do with a low score, are in CGPA vs percentage and school marks.

An education block

Education
B.Tech (Bachelor of Technology), Computer Science and Engineering
Government College of Engineering, Nagpur | 2022 – 2026 | CGPA 8.2/10
Class XII (CBSE), Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Nagpur | 2022 | 90.6%
Class X (CBSE), Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Nagpur | 2020 | 93.4%

Projects: the section that decides most fresher resumes

A fresher has no job history, so projects are the evidence. Choose two to four, most relevant to the role first. For each, say what it was, the stack, who used it and one number. A deployed project with 150 users says more than five unfinished ones. If it has a domain, such as fintech, agritech or edtech, name it, because recruiters search on it.

Project bullets, before and after

  1. Before

Made a website for college using HTML, CSS and JavaScript

    After

Built a hostel-mess feedback site in HTML, CSS and JavaScript; 210 students submitted 1,900 ratings in one term and the warden used the weekly summary to change the menu

    Why

Says who used it, how much, and what changed. The stack is still there, but it is no longer the whole sentence.

  2. Before

    Did project on machine learning

    After

Trained a logistic-regression model on 8,000 loan records in Python with scikit-learn to flag risky applications; reached 81% accuracy on a held-out test set

    Why

Names the data size, the method and the measured result. 'Did project on' names nothing.

  3. Before

Was part of team that made a mobile app

    After

Developed the booking screens of a 4-person Flutter app for a campus sports club; 140 members used it to reserve courts during the semester

    Why

Your own slice of the team effort, with the scale of use.

One page, one column: the reasoning

A single column is not a style preference. Textkernel, a company that builds parsing software, reports that at least 15% of CVs it sees use more than one column, and that even after it improved its column detection only about 90% of them came out correctly. Smaller applicant tracking and HR tools are often less capable, though we cannot test every system, so one column is the safe default. A career-advice site that reviewed 500 fresher resumes reported that about 340 used a graphic two-column layout. Treat that as one site's sample, not a national figure.

One page is the norm for freshers. The same review found that three- and four-page fresher resumes are common in India, which is why most guidance says strictly one.

Export a text-based PDF with embedded fonts, under 1 MB. Greenhouse says it cannot parse files above 2.5 MB, and the usual reason a resume is large is a photo or an image-based template. Keep a DOCX copy for recruiters who ask for an editable file, and name the file Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf rather than 'final_v3'. The full set of parsing rules is in ATS-friendly resume in India.

Before you send it

  • It fits on one page and has one column.
  • Every project and internship bullet names a tool or stack, and at least two of every three carry a number.
  • Each skill in the Skills block appears in a project, an internship or a certificate.
  • Marks match your marksheets and the application form exactly.
  • The phone number and email are correct, and the email is one you will keep.
  • You opened the PDF, selected all, pasted into a text editor, and the text came out in reading order.
  • The file is called Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf.

Questions people ask

Do I need a photo on a fresher resume in India?

For IT, corporate and startup roles, no. Parsers skip or struggle with images, and many recruiters do not expect one. Hospitality, aviation and some sales roles may ask for one, and government forms usually do. When an employer asks, add it; when it does not, leave it off. More in what to remove from an Indian resume.

Is a career objective or a summary better for a fresher?

A two-line summary, because it names your degree, your proof and the role you want. An objective is acceptable on some government forms. See resume summary for freshers for the formula and examples.

What if I have no internship and no projects?

Use what you have done that shows the skill: a course project, a class presentation, a club role, a part-time job, a freelance task, an online course with a graded project. State the scope honestly and use counts where you can. Resume bullets with numbers when you have none shows how.

PDF or Word for Naukri?

Upload a text-based PDF unless the portal says otherwise, and check the size, since Naukri's upload limit has been reported as 2 MB. Keep a DOCX for recruiters who ask for an editable file. Both formats parse when they contain real text; the risk is a scanned or image-based file.

Should I add hobbies or a declaration?

Leave the declaration off; it belongs on some government forms, not on private-sector resumes. One line of hobbies is harmless only if it is relevant, such as a coding club for a developer role, and only if it does not push the resume onto a second page.

Numbers on this page come from these sources, and the text says where a source is a vendor blog or a survey. Where a claim has no source here, it is guidance, not fact.
