Accountant resume with 2 to 5 years of experience: a sample from India

At two to five years the accountant resume shifts from 'entered vouchers' to 'maintained books and filed returns'. Readers look for the clients or entities you handled, returns by name, reconciliation work and how fast you close the month. School marks come off and the summary names the senior role or company type you want next.

Two ways to open the page. Neither is the summary on the sample resume beside it, so you can see more than one approach.

Bullet rewrites, weak to strong

Each pair shows a line people really write and a stronger version of the same fact. The numbers are illustrations. If you have no number, see resume bullets with numbers when you have none.

  1. Before

    Accounting work in Tally

    After

Maintained books for 6 SME clients in Tally Prime and filed monthly GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B and quarterly TDS returns with no late-filing penalties over 18 months

    Why

Client count, software, the returns by name and a clean 18-month record. Say 'filed' only when you submitted the return yourself.

  2. Before

    Bank reconciliation

    After

Reconciled 4 bank accounts (₹12 Cr monthly volume) and cleared a 7-month reconciliation backlog in 5 weeks

    Why

Volume tells the reader the scale; the backlog and the time taken show the result. A bare task name shows neither.

  3. Before

    Helped in audit

    After

Prepared 18 audit schedules and answered 60+ auditor queries across 4 client statutory audits, closing every query within 2 working days

    Why

Counts the schedules and queries and sets a response standard. Audit support is a service, so speed is the measure.

  4. Before

    Handled accounts payable

    After

Processed about 600 vendor invoices a month with three-way matching (order, goods receipt, invoice) and kept 96% of payments within credit terms

    Why

Volume, the control you applied and a service result. 'Handled' says nothing about whether anything went wrong.

  5. Before

    Prepared MIS reports

    After

Built a monthly MIS pack in Excel on sales, expenses and cash for the owner of a ₹22 Cr trading business and flagged ₹9 L of slow-moving stock

    Why

Names the reader, the content and one finding. An MIS report matters when someone acts on it.

  6. Before

    Chased outstanding payments

    After

Recovered ₹14 L of overdue receivables from 22 customers in 3 months through a weekly ageing review and reminder calls

    Why

Accountants who bring in cash get noticed. Amount, count and time frame make the claim checkable.

Skills to list, grouped

Group skills into three or four lines and keep only those you could discuss for ten minutes. Each should appear in a bullet, a project or a certificate.

  • Accounting: Tally Prime, Trial balance, Month-end close, Bank reconciliation, Vendor reconciliation
  • Compliance: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B reconciliation, TDS returns, Audit support
  • Tools and reporting: MS Excel, MIS reporting, Fixed assets

What recruiters for this role tend to look for

  • Clients or entities handled and the software, in one line: 'books for 11 clients in Tally Prime' gives scale and tool together.
  • Returns by name (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, TDS returns) and a clean record over a stated period, such as no late fees or rejected filings.
  • Reconciliation work across bank, vendor and GST. Backlogs cleared and differences found read as practical skill.
  • Month-end close time and what you changed to shorten it. Managers often ask about close speed in the interview.
  • A step beyond data entry: audit support, an MIS pack for an owner, or a junior you trained.

Mistakes common at this level

  • Keeping school marks and course lists. By the third or fourth year the reader wants clients, returns and close time.
  • Writing 'GST filing' with no returns, client count or period. Name GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and how many clients you covered.
  • Mixing firm and company duties without saying which entity. Name the type of business and a turnover band so the reader can judge scale.

Section order on the sample

The sample uses the Classic Single template, A4 (210 by 297 mm), one column, with the sections in this order: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications. The order follows the level: skills and experience lead and school marks have come off.

Questions people ask

How do I show GST work without quoting rates or due dates?

Name the returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, 2B matching), the number of clients and the period. Rates and due dates change, so they do not belong on a resume; the reader knows them already.

Should I list every accounting software I have touched?

List Tally Prime and the one ERP you really used, such as Zoho Books, Busy or SAP. Any tool in Skills should appear in a bullet. A short, honest list reads better than a long one a recruiter cannot test.

Should I list CA Inter on my resume?

If you cleared a level, list it honestly under Education with the level and year, because it is checked. Do not write it for papers you are still attempting. See what to remove from an Indian resume for what to cut.
