Accountant resume for freshers: a sample from India
A fresher accountant is read for practical work, not theory: which software, which entries, which returns and how clean the reconciliation was. One accounts or CA-firm internship with real counts outweighs a long list of papers. The next level moves from 'I entered vouchers' to 'I kept these clients' books and filed these returns'.

Bullet rewrites, weak to strong
Each pair shows a line people really write and a stronger version of the same fact. The numbers are illustrations. If you have no number, see resume bullets with numbers when you have none.
- Before
Did internship at CA firm
AfterVouched 900+ purchase entries and drafted fixed-asset schedules in the statutory audit of 3 private companies (turnover ₹20 to 80 Cr) during a 3-month CA-firm internship
WhyNames the audit tasks, the number of clients and their size band. 'Did internship' tells a reader nothing about the level of work you touched.
- Before
Worked on Tally
AfterEntered 600 vouchers in Tally Prime for a case company across 6 months of books and produced a trial balance that matched the answer key
WhyA tool name is easy to list. A volume and a checkable result show you used it. Write the exact name, Tally Prime, as portals search for it.
- Before
Checked GST invoices
AfterChecked 350 purchase invoices for GSTIN, tax split and invoice date before booking, and returned 28 to vendors for correction
WhyShows the checks you ran and how many errors you caught. Errors found are proof of attention, which accounts managers prize.
- Before
Used Excel for accounts
AfterBuilt an Excel tracker of 140 customer invoices with ageing buckets and follow-up dates; overdue balances fell by ₹3.2 L in 6 weeks
WhyTurns a tool into an outcome. The reader sees what the sheet tracked and what changed because of it.
- Before
Maintained petty cash
AfterMaintained the petty cash book for a 25-person office, matching 180 monthly vouchers to receipts and cutting unexplained differences from 12 to 2
WhyPetty cash is small money but a clear test of discipline. Volume and a before-and-after show the habit.
- Before
Assisted in month-end closing
AfterPosted 70 month-end journal entries and accruals in Tally Prime and gave the trial balance to the accounts head on working day 5, a day ahead of plan
WhyMonth-end close is a core accounts task. Say what you posted and when it was ready, not that you assisted.
Skills to list, grouped
Group skills into three or four lines and keep only those you could discuss for ten minutes. Each should appear in a bullet, a project or a certificate.
- Accounting: Tally Prime, Voucher entry, Bank reconciliation, Trial balance, Fixed assets
- Compliance: GST returns, GSTR-2B reconciliation, TDS computation, Invoice checking
- Tools: MS Excel, Pivot tables, Ageing reports
What recruiters for this role tend to look for
- Tally Prime by name, with a volume: vouchers entered, accounts reconciled. A fresher who names the software and a number usually reads as someone who can start work quickly.
- The returns you touched: GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B working files, TDS computation, 2B matching. Be exact about whether you prepared or filed, since an interviewer will ask you to walk through the steps.
- Reconciliation habits: bank, vendor or GST. A cleared backlog or a count of mismatches found shows you can spot a difference.
- Tidy numbers and consistent dates. Accounts teams tend to read a resume the way they read a ledger, so a mismatch between summary and bullets costs trust.
- Degree and marks in one clear line, since CA firms and companies often check the qualification before anything else.
Mistakes common at this level
- Writing 'Tally' with no version, volume or task. Every commerce graduate lists it; recruiters look for what you did inside it.
- Saying you 'filed GST returns' when you prepared the working file. Use 'prepared' or 'filed' accurately; the difference matters to the person who signs.
- Listing Tally, SAP, QuickBooks, Busy and Zoho together after one internship. Name what you used, and add another only if a bullet shows it.
Section order on the sample
The sample uses the Fresher First template, A4 (210 by 297 mm), one column, with the sections in this order: Summary, Education, Projects, Skills, Experience, Certifications. The order follows the level: education and projects lead because there is little job history yet.
Questions people ask
Should I name the CA firm's clients on my resume?
No. Use a count and a size band (3 private companies, turnover bands) plus the tasks you did. Client names belong to the firm, and engagement terms often keep them private.
I only did a short internship. Can I still apply for Accountant roles?
Yes. A two or three month accounts internship is a common fresher entry. Describe the tasks with counts, add a Tally or GST certificate and put the internship above your projects. Resume format for freshers shows the section order.
Should an M.Com fresher list Class X and XII marks?
For campus drives and many company or CA-firm forms, one line each is common at this stage. Keep them short and drop them after a few years of experience. See CGPA vs percentage and school marks for how to format them.
