Accountant resume with 5+ years of experience: a sample from India

At five or more years the accountant resume is read for scope and control: team size, entity size, close timeline, ERP ownership and audit outcomes. Daily posting duties disappear, and the page should show that you can run an accounts function and keep it compliant, using return names but never rates or due dates.

Bullet rewrites, weak to strong

Each pair shows a line people really write and a stronger version of the same fact. The numbers are illustrations. If you have no number, see resume bullets with numbers when you have none.

  1. Before

    Managed accounts team

    After

Trained 4 junior accountants on SAP FI postings and reviewed their journals for 3 months; posting errors fell from 9% to 2%

    Why

People management shown as a method and a measured result. Say how many people, what you taught and what changed.

  2. Before

    Handled vendor payments

    After

Negotiated early-payment terms with 12 key vendors, saving ₹7.5 L a year in discounts without stretching cash beyond the approved limit

    Why

A saving with a vendor count and a guardrail. Seniors are judged on money kept as well as money recorded.

  3. Before

    Implemented internal controls

    After

Introduced a 3-level approval matrix for high-value payments and cut duplicate or disputed payments from 14 to 2 in a year

    Why

Names the control, the trigger and the effect. Controls are hard to judge until you give a before-and-after.

  4. Before

    Prepared budget

    After

Prepared the annual budget for 4 departments and reviewed variances monthly; actual spend ended within 3% of budget

    Why

Scope, routine and accuracy in one line. A budget claim is stronger once someone can compare plan with actual.

  5. Before

    Handled audit

    After

Closed 11 of 12 internal-audit observations within two quarters by fixing approvals, stock-count sign-offs and fixed-asset tagging

    Why

Shows the observations closed and the three root fixes. An auditor-facing role is read for follow-through.

  6. Before

    Handled GST notices

    After

Responded to 5 departmental notices on GST and TDS with working papers and reconciliations, and closed all without an additional demand

    Why

Count, evidence and outcome. Describe the response, not the law; the reader knows the rules.

Skills to list, grouped

Group skills into three or four lines and keep only those you could discuss for ten minutes. Each should appear in a bullet, a project or a certificate.

  • Accounting and close: Month-end close, Bank reconciliation, Accounts payable, Working capital, Variance analysis
  • Compliance and audit: GST returns, TDS returns, Statutory audit, Internal controls
  • ERP and leadership: SAP FI, Zoho Books, Tally Prime, Team management

What recruiters for this role tend to look for

  • Team size and entity size together: 'team of 6, ₹120 Cr manufacturer' shows your span in a few words.
  • Close timeline with a before and after. The month-end close is the clearest speed measure of an accounts function.
  • ERP ownership: which system, how many plants or entities, and whether you led the migration or only used it.
  • Control and compliance outcomes: audit observations closed, notices answered, duplicate payments removed. They show you protect the company as well as record it.
  • Cash effect with a baseline: debtor days, early-payment savings or working capital released.

Mistakes common at this level

  • Listing a junior accountant's daily duties (voucher entry, ledger posting). At this level they hide your management scope.
  • Naming the ERP without saying what you did in it. 'SAP' alone could mean one login; 'led the SAP FI migration for 2 plants' cannot be misread.
  • Giving a percentage with no baseline ('reduced close time by 40%'). Write the before and after, and the period.

Section order on the sample

The sample uses the Classic Single template, A4 (210 by 297 mm), one column, with the sections in this order: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications. The order follows the level: experience leads, with fewer and sharper entries.

Questions people ask

Should a senior accountant list Tally if the company runs SAP?

Yes, if you can still work in it, since many mid-size firms and subsidiaries run Tally. Put the ERP you own first and mention Tally in the migration bullet or in Skills.

How do I show the move from accountant to accounts manager?

Show scope: team size, entities and the processes you own end to end, such as close, compliance and audit. Place people and process bullets above entry-level work and keep the earlier role shorter.

Can I mention a professional qualification that is not complete?

List what you have cleared, with the level and year, under Education. Interviewers usually ask for details, so be exact. For qualified chartered accountants, see CA resume examples at 5+ years.
