Civil Engineer resume with 2 to 5 years of experience: a sample from India

At two to five years a civil resume is read for what you executed and measured: floors built, cycle times held, bills certified and checks passed. Built-up area, workers supervised and rupee values give a site manager the scale in seconds, and school marks come off. If you are drifting toward planning or billing, the page should show which side you own.

Two ways to open the page. Neither is the summary on the sample resume beside it, so you can see more than one approach.

Summary example 1

Summary

Builds look-ahead schedules in MS Project and Primavera P6, recovered a 10-day delay in 4 weeks and tracks 6 subcontractors against plan. Looking for a senior planning engineer role. For someone moving from execution to planning: the schedule tools, one recovery number and the scope of tracking.

Summary example 2

Summary
Quantity Surveyor with 4 years in commercial construction. Measures and certifies ₹6 Cr of subcontractor bills a year, builds BOQs in Excel and has caught ₹11 L of claims that did not match site measurements. Looking for a senior QS or billing engineer role.A specialist summary: bills certified, a tool and one catch in rupees. Suits a QS or billing engineer who wants a larger project.

Bullet rewrites, weak to strong

Each pair shows a line people really write and a stronger version of the same fact. The numbers are illustrations. If you have no number, see resume bullets with numbers when you have none.

  1. Before

    Site work

    After

Supervised RCC work for a G+4 residential project of 28,000 sq ft as site engineer, coordinating 40+ workers; the slab cycle averaged 9 days against 11 planned

    Why

Structure, area, crew size and a cycle time against plan. 'Site work' could mean anything from supervising to tidying.

  2. Before

    Did billing work

    After

Prepared and certified 9 running bills worth ₹2.4 Cr for a commercial block and queried ₹11 L of claims that did not match measured quantities

    Why

Number of bills, their value and a saving that came from checking. Billing is judged on accuracy, so show the check.

  3. Before

    Quality checking at site

    After

Tested 180 concrete cube sets, tracked results in Excel and flagged 3 batches with low 7-day strength; the ready-mix supplier corrected its water-cement ratio

    Why

Test volume, the tool used to track and the exception found, with what happened next. A QA/QC reader looks for the exception.

  4. Before

    Prepared estimates

    After

Prepared the BOQ and cost estimate for a 38,000 sq ft clubhouse in Excel from architect drawings; the awarded contract price came within 4% of it

    Why

Area, tool, source and how close the estimate landed. Accuracy against the awarded price is the quantity-surveying measure.

  5. Before

    Handled labour

    After

Managed 3 labour gangs of 60 workers on finishing work and raised daily plastering output from 220 to 310 sq m by staging material a day ahead

    Why

Crew size, an output rate before and after and the method. Productivity is how site managers judge supervisors.

  6. Before

    Followed safety rules

    After

Ran daily toolbox talks for 85 workers and weekly scaffold and harness checks, recording zero lost-time injuries across 16 months on a 3-tower site

    Why

Safety on a site is a routine plus a record. State both, and keep the period honest.

Skills to list, grouped

Group skills into three or four lines and keep only those you could discuss for ten minutes. Each should appear in a bullet, a project or a certificate.

  • Site execution: RCC Works, Formwork, Labour Supervision, Site Safety
  • Billing and QS: Quantity Surveying, Measurement and Billing, BOQ Preparation
  • QA/QC: Cube Testing, Pre-pour Checks
  • Tools: AutoCAD, MS Excel, MS Project, Primavera P6

What recruiters for this role tend to look for

  • Built-up area, floors, towers or project value in the first bullet of each role, so the scale of the site is clear before the detail.
  • Cycle times, productivity rates and wastage percentages against a plan or an earlier baseline.
  • Measurement and billing ownership: the number of bills, the value certified and any variance you caught.
  • QA/QC discipline: checklists, cube results and consultant rejections, stated as counts.
  • Software that matches the role: MS Project or Primavera for planning, Excel for billing, AutoCAD for drawing, each shown in a bullet.

Mistakes common at this level

  • Writing 'supervised site activities' with no area, floors or crew size. A site manager cannot tell a villa from a high-rise.
  • Keeping school marks and a B.Tech project description on the page after three years of site work.
  • Claiming quantity-surveying or billing skill with no bill count or rupee value. Say how many bills, how much and how accurate.

Section order on the sample

The sample uses the Classic Single template, A4 (210 by 297 mm), one column, with the sections in this order: Summary, Experience, Skills, Education, Certifications. The order follows the level: skills and experience lead and school marks have come off.

Questions people ask

I did both execution and billing. Which should lead?

Lead with the one the target job needs and keep the other as one supporting bullet. A billing role reads measurement and certification first; an execution role reads cycle times and crew. The summary can name both in one line.

How do I show a project's size if I only worked on one block?

Name your block and its area, then give the project total in brackets if it helps, for example 'Tower B (3 towers, 2.1 lakh sq ft in all)'. A reader should see your own scope first and the project scale second.

Is Primavera P6 worth listing?

Only if you have built or updated a schedule in it. Put it next to a result such as a delay recovered or a look-ahead issued. A tool with no result reads the same as a tool you saw once. For layout rules, see ATS-friendly resume format.
