Civil Engineer resume for freshers: a sample from India

A civil fresher is read for two kinds of evidence: design work done to a code, and time spent on a real site. A STAAD.Pro model with the load cases named, a bar-bending schedule you prepared or a slump log you kept shows more than a list of software. Site recruiters want to know you can stand on a slab and measure; design recruiters want the code and the tool, so lead with whichever side the job post asks for.

Summary examples for a fresher

Two ways to open the page. Neither is the summary on the sample resume beside it, so you can see more than one approach.

Summary example 1

Summary
Diploma in Civil Engineering (2025, 78%) with a 6-month apprenticeship on a road and drainage project. Reads drawings, takes levels with an auto level and prepares measurement sheets in MS Excel. Applying for junior site engineer roles.Fits a diploma holder aiming for site work. Leads with real field time, which carries more weight than software at this entry point.

Summary example 2

Summary
Final-year B.E. Civil student (2027) with an RCC design project in STAAD.Pro to IS 456 and IS 1893 and a Revit model of a G+3 hostel. Looking for a structural design trainee role in a consultancy.Names the codes and the tools in the order a design recruiter reads them. Works when you want a design or consultancy role instead of site work.

Bullet rewrites, weak to strong

Each pair shows a line people really write and a stronger version of the same fact. The numbers are illustrations. If you have no number, see resume bullets with numbers when you have none.

  1. Before

    Project on building design

    After

Designed a G+3 residential structure in STAAD.Pro and AutoCAD as per IS 456 and IS 1893; estimated quantities and cost (₹1.9 Cr) in MS Excel

    Why

Names the structure, the tools and the two codes it was designed to, then closes with a cost. Codes belong here as references; do not quote clauses you did not use.

  2. Before

    Internship at construction site

    After

Logged slump values and cube-sample details for 14 pours on a G+5 hospital block and flagged 2 pours where slump fell below the specified range

    Why

A site quality task with a count and a finding. It shows you saw the check done and could read the result.

  3. Before

    Knows AutoCAD

    After

Drafted a 12-sheet plan set (plans, 2 sections, elevation, door-window schedule) for a 1,450 sq ft home in AutoCAD; the owner used it for the building-plan application

    Why

A sheet count, a built-up area and a user turn a tool name into a deliverable. Only claim the use if the owner would confirm it.

  4. Before

    Did estimation in Excel

    After

Estimated earthwork, concrete, steel and masonry quantities for a G+2 school block in Excel, arriving at ₹86 L; a contractor's rate check came within 6%

    Why

Four quantity heads, a total and an independent cross-check. Estimating is a core site and billing skill, and the cross-check shows you tested your own work.

  5. Before

    Attended survey camp

    After

Completed a 3-week surveying camp and ran a 1.8 km closed traverse with a total station, closing it with an error of 1 in 4,500

    Why

A closing error is a number surveyors recognise. It shows you completed the field work and checked it, which 'attended' does not.

  6. Before

    Member of civil club

    After

Organised the bridge-design contest at the department fest: 42 teams, 3 judges and a load-test rig built from scrap steel in two weeks

    Why

Leadership in a civil setting: teams, judges and a physical rig. A position of responsibility counts when it has scale.

Skills to list, grouped

Group skills into three or four lines and keep only those you could discuss for ten minutes. Each should appear in a bullet, a project or a certificate.

  • Design and drawing: STAAD.Pro, AutoCAD, Revit (basics)
  • Estimation and site: Quantity Estimation, Bar Bending Schedule, Surveying
  • Codes: IS 456, IS 1893
  • Materials and tools: Concrete Mix Design, MS Excel

What recruiters for this role tend to look for

  • Design work tied to a code and a tool: structure type, load cases and software, with IS 456 or IS 1893 named only if you used them.
  • Site contact: an internship, a site-visit report or a surveying camp with something you measured, logged or prepared yourself.
  • Quantity estimation in Excel, since both site and billing roles start there. Show the structure and the total.
  • CGPA or percentage near the top. Construction and infrastructure firms often screen on it for trainee batches.
  • Willingness to relocate to project sites, stated plainly in the header or summary.

Mistakes common at this level

  • Listing STAAD.Pro, Revit, Primavera and ETABS because the syllabus mentioned them. Keep the tools you could build a model in, in front of an interviewer.
  • Describing the design project as 'analysis and design of a building' without the floors, the loads, the code or the result.
  • Mixing diploma, degree and course names without years. Parsers and eligibility screens read dates, so give each qualification its own dated line.

Section order on the sample

The sample uses the Fresher First template, A4 (210 by 297 mm), one column, with the sections in this order: Summary, Education, Projects, Skills, Experience, Certifications. The order follows the level: education and projects lead because there is little job history yet.

Questions people ask

Should I mention IS codes on a fresher resume?

Yes, as references to the work you did, such as designing to IS 456 and IS 1893 in STAAD.Pro. Do not list code numbers as skills unless a project shows you applied them, and never quote clauses you cannot explain.

I have no site internship. What can I show?

Use site visits, a surveying camp, a laboratory project and a design project, and describe what you measured or prepared yourself. A short, honest bullet beats a visit written up as experience. What to remove from an Indian resume helps you free the space.

Are school marks needed for civil campus drives?

For campus drives and many engineering recruiters, usually yes: one line each for Class X and XII, matching the application form. Details are in CGPA vs percentage and school marks.
