Resume for startups: shipped work, ownership and a link that opens
A startup is not one company, so this is not one format. It is the shape that early-stage teams in India tend to read well: short, specific, proof you shipped something, and a link that works on a phone.

In short
- Startups read fast and often by hand. They look for things shipped, breadth and ownership of the whole job.
- Show what you took from idea to release, with the scale of use, and link to it.
- Small teams use a range of tools. Zoho Recruit documents a 10 MB file limit and Greenhouse does not parse files above 2.5 MB. A text-based PDF under 1 MB works everywhere.
- Drop school marks and any declaration. Be exact about team size and your own part.
What we know, and what we do not
Ownership from idea to release
A small team hires people who can take a vague request and finish it. The strongest bullet shows a whole arc: where the work started, what you decided, and what happened after it shipped. Give team size so the reader can tell the scale of your part.
- Before
Worked on app development at a startup
AfterDelivered a refund-request feature from a one-line message to production in 9 days and cut refund-related tickets by about 30% in the first month
WhyStart, finish, time taken and result. 'Worked on' shows none of them.
- Before
Full-stack development
AfterBuilt the React front end and the Node.js API for an invoicing tool that 45 small shops used to send 1,200 invoices in its first month
WhyBoth ends of the stack, and who used the result and how much.
- Before
Also handled customer queries
AfterAnswered 15 customer emails a day during launch week and turned the 6 most common questions into help articles that halved repeat emails
WhyBreadth is shown by a result that outlasted the week.
- Before
Did marketing and sales activities
AfterRan a 3-week referral test across 200 users that brought in 38 sign-ups for under ₹4,000
WhyA small experiment with a cost and an outcome is what an early team values.
A link that opens
Put a deployed project or a repository near the top and write the URL as visible text. Open it on your phone before you send, since a founder will probably do the same. Free hosting tiers sometimes sleep, so confirm that the page wakes in a few seconds. A README that explains what the project does, how to run it and what you decided is part of the evidence.
Breadth without a list of thirty tools
Early teams want people who can work across the stack, but a skills list of thirty tools reads as the opposite. Group skills into three lines such as Languages, Product stack and Infrastructure, and make sure each appears in a bullet. Where you can only claim depth in one area, say so in the summary and let the projects show the rest.
Tools small companies use, and what they can read
Zoho Recruit's help documentation lists a limit of 10 MB per file, and a Zoho community thread says resumes there are parsed with the DaXtra engine. Greenhouse says it will not parse files above 2.5 MB. The common thread is that image-heavy, multi-column files fail more often than plain ones. Keep the PDF text-based and under 1 MB, and name it Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf. When you email a founder directly, attach that file and keep the message to three or four lines that say who you are and what you shipped.
What to drop
Class X and XII marks, a declaration, hobbies and any photo. A startup is hiring for the work, and a resume full of them looks like it was written for a different kind of employer. See what to remove from an Indian resume for the reasoning.
Before you submit: a short checklist
- Each recent role or project shows something shipped and who used it.
- I state team size and which part was mine.
- A deployed link or repository is written as visible text, and I opened it on my phone.
- Skills are in three lines and each skill appears in a bullet.
- School marks, hobbies, photo and declaration are removed.
- One page, text-based PDF under 1 MB.
Questions people ask
Is a startup resume different from a corporate one?
The honesty rules are the same. The emphasis differs: shipped work, ownership, breadth and working links, on one page, with school marks and declarations removed.
Should I list Class X and XII marks for a startup?
Usually not, unless the application form asks. They take room that bullets about shipped work need.
How do I show breadth if all I have is college projects?
Choose the project where you touched the whole stack and describe it from idea to release, with who used it. One end-to-end project shows more breadth than five narrow ones.
Can I send a portfolio link instead of a resume?
Send both. Attach the resume as a PDF and write the portfolio URL as visible text at the top, because some tools and people read only the file.
